About Us
The Texas Band of Yaqui Indians is a tribal government recognized by the State of Texas, formed by Yaqui (Yoeme) families displaced from their ancestral homelands in Sonora who later settled in Texas. Our community has endured persecution, forced migration, and generations of separation from its traditional territories while preserving the Hiaki language, cultural ceremonies, family ties, and traditional systems of governance.
Throughout our history, the Texas Yaqui community has maintained cultural, familial, and ceremonial connections with the Yaqui pueblos of Sonora, Mexico. We honor the traditional authorities of the Yaqui people, their traditions, and their enduring leadership, which represent the historic heartland of the Yoeme people. These longstanding relationships have contributed to preserving our shared cultural heritage across international borders and have provided important cultural support and affirmation of identity for Texas Yaqui families. They have also strengthened cultural and familial ties between Texas Yaqui families and the Yaqui pueblos of Sonora.
The continued existence and legitimacy of our tribal community are supported by historical records, genealogical documentation, recognition by the State of Texas, and documented relationships with Yaqui authorities and communities in Sonora. As descendants of displaced Yoeme families, we remain committed to preserving the legacy of our ancestors, strengthening our ties with the pueblos of Sonora, and protecting our identity, culture, language, and traditional governing institutions for future generations.
As a tribal government, the Texas Band of Yaqui Indians exercises its authority in accordance with its laws, customs, and governmental structure, working to preserve the rights, cultural heritage, and self-determination of the Yaqui Nation of Texas community.
