Native American Tribes, When and Where they Lived
by Amy Heath
"Colonialism- the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically," -Oxford Languages
The population of North America changed through colonial settlement in the 1500s-1700s. Most European immigrants arrived to places claimed by European countries as colonies and new frontiers for economic gain, which displaced many indigenous groups or brought them into direct physical conflicts for control of an area.
As the United States settlers expanded across the continent in the 1800s, many of these tribes were pushed into different regions, including Texas, before being forced into Indian Territory (the State of Oklahoma) beginning in 1830.
Some exceptions in Texas include the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe now located in Livingston, Texas, some of the Kickapoo in Eagle Pass, Texas, the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo in El Paso, Texas, and the State recognized Band of Yaqui Indians based in Lubbock ,Texas.
Other people and groups indigenous to Texas, who also have shared Hispanic heritage, are not recognized by the federal government even though they maintain many of their uniform cultural traditions, and these peoples remain underrepresented in our national narrative.
