YAQUI WARRIORS IN MOROCCO – SOLDIERS (1921–1926)

Did you know hundreds of Yaqui warriors from Sonora crossed the Atlantic to fight in Spanish Morocco during the Rif War?

Spanish Morocco was located along the northern coast of modern day Morocco, right where Africa meets the Mediterranean Sea.

They sailed as elite soldiers for the Spanish Foreign Legion recruited for their unmatched guerrilla skills after centuries resisting in Sonora's mountains.

 THE TIMELINE

1921: Spain reels from the Battle of Annual disaster in Morocco's Rif Mountains – 20,000 troops slaughtered by Abd el-Krim's Berber forces.

Mexico's government (still nervous about Yaqui uprisings) agrees to "export" ~500 battle-hardened Yaqui warriors. Perfect timing: Spain needs mountain fighters NOW.

Veracruz → Cádiz → Spanish Morocco. The Yaquis join 16th Company, Spanish Foreign Legion and ship across to fight in the Rif.

1925: Alhucemas Bay landing – Yaquis storm beaches with Franco's vanguard, helping crush Rif resistance and end the war. Many never return home, blending into northern Morocco.

 TIMELINE: SONORA → RIF MOUNTAINS

1920-21-Yaqui Wars aftermath – Mexico controls Sonora but fears rebellion. Spain loses Annual (July 1921) – needs elite fighters.

Late 1921 -500 Yaquis recruited from Sonora camps → sail Veracruz → Cádiz. Join 16th Company, Spanish Foreign Legion.

1921-25 -Deployed to Spanish Morocco (Rif region). Fight Berber guerrillas using Sonora-honed mountain tactics.

Sep 8, 1925 -Alhucemas Bay landing – First modern amphibious assault. Yaquis secure beachheads → advance crushes Rif Republic.

1926 -Abd el-Krim surrenders. War ends. Some Yaquis return; others stay in Morocco – Yoeme diaspora born.

Africa = Spanish Morocco (Rif region). Precision matters in Yaqui history.
